Pocket Report
While attending the MFA program at OCAD University, I was tasked with developing a mobile app prototype. I've been interested in ways of incorporating tech into media production, and so I started developing a mobile camera report app.
The biggest challenge was to optimize the recording and data input processes: the fundamental rule I set for the development team was that the app would have to be as fast as recording information onto existing paper reports - if not faster. Often a production team will choose specific tools for the shoot; lenses, camera bodies, filters and so on. By building databases which could be selected during pre-production and accessed quickly on set, we found that generating real-time reports is not only possible but actually can be faster than writing reports by hand.
The one drawback, as noted by a wise assistant, was that one could drop a paper report into a lake, dry it off and keep going. The same can't be said for a phone...
While the app was never publicly released, the infrastructure is currently being expanded as part of a larger upcoming app suite aimed at production management and reporting.
